1-Day Itinerary

  • Take in endless sand dunes east of Stovepipe Wells Village on a casual stroll or all-day jaunt. Photographers will find the lighting at its best at dawn or in the late afternoon.
  • Drive up Dante’s View in Death Valley National Park. This breathtaking viewpoint perches 5,000 feet above Death Valley itself, offering the best views in the park.

More Time?

  • Ride off road 4X4 trails. Death Valley National Park boasts a network of unpaved and primitive backcountry roads that can be used by 4-wheel drive or light trucks. Check at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center or ranger stations for conditions.
  • Embark on a backpacking adventure down the moderate Wildrose Peak Trail. The 8.2-mile roundtrip adventure begins at the Charcoal Kilns.
  • Visit the historic Scotty’s Castle for a glimpse of life during the 20s.

Know Before You Go

  • Unlike most national parks, Death Valley is at its best October through mid-April.
  • The sheer size of Death Valley National Park makes a vehicle essential. Remember, gas is sold at Furnace Creek, Scotty’s Castle, Panamint Springs Resort, and Stovepipe Wells Village.
  • Always carry water—lots of water—with you!
