Olympic National Park

Untamed wilderness covers roughly 95% of Olympic National Park. Primeval forests—including temperate rain forests—filled with 1,000-year-old trees are juxtaposed against craggy shorelines and glacier-capped peaks.

Location

West of Seattle, the 922,000-acre Olympic Park encompasses most of the Olympic Peninsula.

Flora & Fauna

The abundant old-growth forests support deer, elk, and even bears. Offshore, you might spot whales, dolphins, and seals.

Did You Know?

Olympic National Park is home to many of the country’s largest trees, including a spruce with a circumference of nearly 59 feet.

1-Day Itinerary

Olympic National Park can be split into three zones: Mountain, coast, and rain forest. If you’re there for a single day, pick a zone—and hike it thoroughly.

More Time?

  • Clamber along roaring beaches, such as popular Rialto Beach, hiking the wild and wooly coastline of the Pacific Ocean in Olympic National Park.
  • 12 feet of rain a year creates the huge trees in the lush Hoh Rain Forest. Pick a hike and dive into the forest. The folks at the visitor center can help you choose!
  • Hurricane Ridge is the park’s mostly easily reached mountain area. It’s also the epicenter for skiing and snowshoeing in Olympic National Park during the winter.

Know Before You Go

  • Pets are permitted on a leash (up to 6 feet in length) in park campgrounds and parking areas. Pets are prohibited in all park buildings, in the back country, and generally all park trails.
  • Come prepared for a variety of weather. Bring rain gear and layered clothing.

Activities Near the Park

Forks, WA—setting for the bestselling Twilight series—is just outside the park.
