Did You Know?

The famed Appalachian Trail crosses through Shenandoah National Park.

1-Day Itinerary

If you only have one day in Shenandoah National Park, don’t miss the 105-mile Skyline Drive. This scenic roadway boasts breathtaking overlooks—and easy access to short day hikes. Watch for animals crossing the road!

More Time?

  • The moderately challenging Bearfence Mountain Trail is just 1.2 miles but passes by fun climbing rocks and, some say, the best views in Shenandoah National Park. Sturdy hiking shoes are a must!
  • Leave from Skyland on a guided horseback riding adventure, ambling along heavily wooded trails.
  • Check out a ranger-guided seminar—available year-round—for in-depth exploration of Shenandoah. Popular programs include Live Birds of Prey and the Ancient Volcano Hike.

Know Before You Go

  • The mountains in Shenandoah National Park are roughly 10 degrees cooler than the valleys below, making layered clothing key!
  • Visit the park in the spring for wildflowers; summer for prime wildlife viewing; fall for the foliage; winter for the clearest views.
