Location

Yellowstone covers 2,221,766 acres in the northwestern corner of Wyoming, stretching into Montana and Idaho.

Flora & Fauna

Explore expansive valleys, large lakes, and geothermal wonders—plus the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states.

Did You Know?

Yellowstone Park sits atop a “super-volcano” that creates more than 300 geysers, including Old Faithful.

1-Day Itinerary

Drive the lower loop, getting out at two of the largest geyser areas in Yellowstone—Norris and Old Faithful. To the east, you’ll explore popular buffalo grazing areas, including Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Further south, lies Yellowstone Lake.

More Time?

  • Examine the exhibits on Yellowstone’s history—from Native Americas to today—at Albright Visitor Center at Mammoth Hot Springs.
  • There are more geysers at Yellowstone than anywhere else on Earth. Go geyser gazing all over the park!
  • Yellowstone National Park boasts miles and miles of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during winter months.
  • Take a hike on Trout Lake trail. This short, uphill hike leads you to a lake where you’re likely see a family of river otters playing. If you visit in June, you may catch the spawning of the cut throat trout on the far side of the lake.

Know Before You Go

  • Limit your travels to one or two areas if you have one day or less to spend in Yellowstone National Park.
  • Expect slow traveling in July and August because those are the busiest months.
  • Wildlife (in particular, bison) are often caught on the roads, so be careful when driving!
